THE ORIGINS OF THE TABLE “THE BURIAL OF THE COUNT OF ORGAZ”
“The Burial of the Count of Orgaz is a commission from 1585. The origin of the painting resides in a miraculous event that occurred in the twenties of the fourteenth century during the funeral of Don Gonzalo Ruiz. Gonzalo Ruiz was a Toledo knight, Count of Orgaz , known for being the protector and financier of religious institutions in Toledo, a pious and religious man, in fact, the construction of the Church of Santo Tomé was financed by the manor of Orgaz, the Lord of Orgaz dies and leaves in his testamentary note that, every year, the inhabitants of his fief keep contributing a certain amount to the maintenance of the Church of Santo Tomé. He forced the town of Orgaz to be delivered every year, both to the monastery and to the church, two lambs, sixteen chickens, two wineskins, two loads of firewood and eight hundred coins.
The pastor of Santo Tomé
Two hundred years later, the inhabitants of the old manor of Orgaz got tired of continuing to pay this fee that the count had left and suspended the payment. The parish priest of Santo Tomé – the one who appears in the painting with a white chasuble on our right – is Father Núñez, who demands the inhabitants of Orgaz for non-payment. Due to the political, social and legal reality of Spain in the mid-16th century, the Court decides to give the reason to the parish of Santo Tomé. Therefore, the inhabitants of Orgaz had to re-pay this fee to which all unpaid fees of the years prior to the court order were added. Father Núñez was immensely grateful to the late count of Orgaz and, thanks to the contributions he received annually, he entrusts a painting to Greco that represents what was already a Toledo legend in the 16th century: the moment of the burial of the Count of Orgaz in his funeral chapel “.
